A’Ibom Assembly Passes AKISIEC Bill

Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly, Thursday, 25th April, passed the amended independent Electoral commission law, Cap 69 of 2022 to improve the efficiency and intergrity of the state Independent Electoral Commision,AKISIEC.


The passage followed the ratification and adoption of the report of the House Of Assembly Committee on local Government and Chieftaincy affairs during Thursday’s plenary.

The member representing Etim Ekpo/ Ika state constituency, Mfon Idung , who chaired the committee, in his report said, the amendment would promote transparency and accountability in the electoral process and guarantee the much-needed independence of the state Electoral umpire.

According to Mr. Idung, the amendment would also instill confidence in the local governments as the third tier in the Federal system of government.


The speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mr. Udeme Otong, commended the committee for consulting widely with various electoral stakeholders including, AKISIEC, the Independent National Electoral Commision, INEC, civil societies, political parties, the political class, lawyers and the Media to seek inputs for an acceptable decision that would strengthen governance at the grassroots, starting with free , fair and credible local government elections.
