Tragedy in Lagos: Excavator Causes Mosque Collapse, Killed 11-Year-Old Girl

The tragic incident in Lagos, where an excavator struck a mosque in the Papa Ajao area, has led to the collapse of the building and the death of an 11-year-old girl, with several others injured. The incident occurred during afternoon prayers, trapping worshippers under the debris.

Lagos State authorities, including the Commissioner of Police, Gbenga Omotoso, and the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, have confirmed the details. The mosque’s collapse was attributed to destabilization caused by excavation work for a road-clearing project. Rescue efforts are ongoing, and emergency responders are on the scene.

Local residents expressed that the mosque, which had been stable for years, only became vulnerable due to the recent excavation activities. The operator of the excavator fled the scene after the collapse. This incident highlights the critical need for cautious execution of construction and excavation projects to prevent such disasters in the future.
