Yahaya Bello: AGF Warns Against Obstruction of Justice

By Abraham Amah

The Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi has warned against any further obstruction of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in its duties, specifically referencing the recent events involving former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello who is evading arrest by the EFCC.

In a statement released today, Mr. Fagbemi expressed deep concerns over the challenges faced by the EFCC during the performance of its statutory responsibilities. He emphasized that the EFCC is legally empowered to invite individuals of interest for questioning, regardless of their social standing.

Fagbemi stressed that it is important for individuals to cooperate with the EFCC rather than obstruct their investigations. He condemned any attempts by public officials, who are themselves entitled to protection from law enforcement, to hinder the EFCC’s work.

The AGF highlighted that evading the law only complicates matters further and called for respect for the rule of law. He pledged to hold the EFCC and other agencies accountable if they overstep their bounds, while emphasizing the need for State institutions to function efficiently.

Fagbemi urged those invited by the EFCC or any agency to respond with dignity and respect, rather than resorting to self-help tactics that could tarnish Nigeria’s reputation internationally.

The conduct of politically exposed individuals who actively hinder the pursuit of justice in Nigeria is not only reprehensible but also deeply concerning. Such actions undermine the integrity of the legal system and erode public trust in the nation’s governance. It is imperative that those in positions of power and influence uphold the principles of justice, accountability, and the rule of law, setting a responsible example for all citizens to follow.

By obstructing the work of institutions such as the EFCC, politically exposed persons risk perpetuating a culture of impunity that can have far-reaching consequences for the country’s democratic process and overall stability. The rule of law should apply equally to all individuals, regardless of their social or political standing. Respect for legal processes and cooperation with law enforcement agencies are fundamental components of a functioning democracy and a just society.

Attorney General Fagbemi’s warning serves as a stark reminder that no one is above the law and that attempts to impede lawful investigations will not be tolerated. Upholding the rule of law is essential for a fair and transparent society where justice prevails, and individuals are held accountable for their actions. It is incumbent upon all stakeholders, including political figures, to support the efforts of law enforcement agencies in combating corruption and ensuring that justice is served without interference or obstruction.
