Yahaya Bello Not in EFCC Custody, Says Commission

By Funmi Ojo

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied reports that former Kogi Governor, Yahaya Bello, is in its custody. According to the EFCC’s Spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, Bello remains wanted for alleged N80.2 billion money laundering charges.

Earlier, Bello’s Media office claimed that he had honoured the EFCC’s invitation and was accompanied by high-profile Nigerians.

The office stated that Bello has great respect for the rule of law and constituted authority and had sought to enforce his fundamental rights to ensure due process.

However, the EFCC countered this claim, saying that Bello is not in its custody and that a subsisting warrant for his arrest remains in place.

The commission emphasized that Bello’s case is a criminal charge, separate from the fundamental rights enforcement action he filed.

The EFCC has urged Bello to turn himself in and answer to the charges preferred against him, assuring that it will continue to exercise its mandate in the overall interest of the nation.
