Workers protest maltreatment by company

Workers of Sterling Petrochemical and Fertilizer Ltd, Okopedi, Ete in Ikot Abasi local Government of Akwa Ibom State, Tuesday, 30th April took, protested against what they described as inhuman treatment, meted to them by the management of the oil producing company.

With placards, they demanded the immidiate sack of the general manager, logistics, Base manager, Mr. Naseer, Uko Dominic, Mr. Samuel Ayala, the CSO (logistics), Mr. Ubong, Mr Santos, Mr. Talabi, the Catering manager, Mr. Ali, Mr. Justine , the camp Boss, Mr. Vijay, the workshop manager, Mr. Richard and Mr. Don and other management staff for maltreating them and sitting on their rights.

The worker alleged they are treated as slaves with no identity cards, no appointment letters, no medical care, no insurance for drivers and most especially, many of them were dismissed without genuine reasons and legitimate entittlements.

Again, they alleged that the salaries they receive from the company is peanuts, compared to what the same company pays to workers in other states where they operate.

The management of the company could not react to our reporter at press time due to pressure and security reasons, but the chairman of industrial committee of Ikot Abasi local government, who spoke on behalf of the local government chairman, Hon. Eno Umorok appreciated the workers for the decorum with which they conducted themselves.

He asked the company to improve the welfare package of it’s staff as it is done in other places and particularly asked them to reinstate the workers the sacked illegally.
