The Nigerian government has enlisted experts from the United States and France to examine the wreckage of a Sikorsky SK76 helicopter that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off Bonny Finima on October 24, 2024.
The helicopter, operated by Eastwind Aviation, had six passengers and two crew members on board. Following an extensive eight-day search, five bodies have been recovered, while three remain missing.
At a briefing in Abuja, Aviation and Aerospace Development Minister Festus Keyamo said American and French experts were involved due to the aircraft’s origins—designed in the U.S. and with an engine from France.
He confirmed that the black box and other key components were on their way to Abuja for analysis by Nigeria’s National Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB).
Keyamo outlined that the investigation will consider multiple factors including maintenance records, crew training, and environmental factors.
The minister praised the collaboration among Nigerian aviation agencies, including the NCAA, NAMA, and NIMET.
He assured the public of transparency, noting that a preliminary report will be released within 30 days, with a full report following as soon as possible.
Keyamo also announced support for the victims’ families through the NSIB’s family assistance program, facilitated in part by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.
The investigation aims to prevent similar tragedies by addressing any safety issues revealed.
