Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has stated that the Supreme Court judgment granting local government financial autonomy in the country does not affect Delta State.
Oborevwori clarified that the state government does not tamper with funds belonging to the local government councils.
According to the Governor, “The Supreme Court has given judgment. It does not affect Delta State Government.
Oborevwori made this assertion shortly after casting his vote at Ward 6, Unit 33 in the local government elections in Osubi, Okpe Local Government Area.
He declared his support for financial autonomy, stating, “I am a supporter of financial autonomy, and as a former speaker, we were at the forefront of financial autonomy for the legislature and the judiciary. I still believe in it.”
The Governor assured Deltans that the election would be peaceful and expressed confidence that the candidates of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) would win.
However, the local government elections in the state was marred by low turnout. Traders at the popular Igbudu market continued their business in Warri, and commercial transporters were also actively plying their trade.
Security presence was scanty along major roads, and as at 10:57 a.m., eligible voters were yet to come out in significant numbers to cast their votes in Warri South, Uvwie, and the Governor’s hometown of Osubi, Okpe Local Government Area.
The National Telescope Newspaper correspondent who monitored the election, reports that voting was scheduled to end by 2 p.m. today. Despite the low turnout, the Delta State government remained optimistic about the election process and the expected outcomes.
