Unilorin launches investigation into lecturer beaten to coma by student

The management of the University of Ilorin has launched an investigation into the beaten of a lecturer, Mrs Rahmat Zakariyah by a a student of the institution, simply identified as Captain Walz.

Speaking with National Telescope in a telephone chat on Monday, the Director of Corporate Affairs of the institution, Mr. Kunle Akogun who confirmed the incident disclosed that the incident is presently under investigation.

Akogun however confirmed that the victim is now in a stable condition.

He said, “It’s true, the incident happened. The Vice Chancellor, Prof Sulyman Age Abdulkareem has visited the lecturer in company of some Deans and other University staff.

“The Vice Chancellor of the University has requested that the victim should be treated on the bill of the institution.

This is coming just as the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG) has condemned the attack on the lecturer.

The group made the call in a statement released at the weekend by its National Coordinator, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim, describing the physical assault on Mrs Zakariyah as irresponsible, barbaric, animalistic and unpardonable.

It would be recalled that Captain Walz reportedly descended on his project supervisor, Mrs Zakariyah in her office on Thursday, November 11, 2021.

The student was said to have sought the assistance of Mrs Zakariyah because he did not carryout his compulsory Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).

The lecturer, this medium learnt turned down the request of Walz hence his decision to pounce on her until Mrs Zakariyah went into coma.

She was subsequently rushed to an undisclosed medical facility for treatment while the suspect was arrested by the institution’s authority and subsequently handed over to the police.
