Unilorin gets new governing council

The Federal Government has appointed Professor Aminu Salihu Mikailu, former Vice Chancellor of Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, as the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN).

This announcement was made over the weekend by the Federal Ministry of Education, according to a statement issued by Mr. Kunle Akogun, the university’s Director of Corporate Affairs.

The ministry also reconstituted governing councils for several other federal tertiary education institutions across the country.

Joining Professor Mikailu on the new UNILORIN Governing Council are Amina Yusuf Garba, mni, Barrister Auwalu Abdullahi, Babayo Shehu, and Aisha Gunabi.

These members will work alongside seven elected internal members of the council, which include representatives from the University Senate (four members), the Congregation (two members), and the Convocation (one member).

The council also comprises the Principal Officers of the University, with the Registrar serving as the Council Secretary.

Professor Mikailu brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He previously served as Vice Chancellor of Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, from 1999 to 2004.

Following that, he was Vice Chancellor of Kaduna State University from 2004 to 2006, and later served as Acting Vice Chancellor of Nasarawa State University from 2013 to 2014.

In addition, he has held the position of Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Omoku, Rivers State.

The new Governing Council will be officially inaugurated alongside the councils of other federal tertiary education institutions, while date for this inauguration will be announced by the National Universities Commission.

UNILORIN, a leading institution in Nigeria, is set to benefit from the extensive administrative experience and leadership that Professor Mikailu and the other council members bring.

This development is part of a broader effort by the Federal Ministry of Education to strengthen the governance structures of tertiary institutions across the country, ensuring that they are well-equipped to meet educational challenges and drive academic excellence.
