A professor at the department of plant biology, university of Ilorin Professor Paul Ojo Fatoba has condemned the act of farming on road side by farmers.

Fatoba while delivering his lecture at the 183rd Inaugural lecture of the University of Ilorin in Ilorin on Thursday said a good farming should be done at least 20 meters away from the road in other to avoid damage of crops and hindrances from the roads.

Speaking on the topic: “The unrecognized are also important”, the professor called on the federal government to embrace forestation because of the importance of plants in the purification and safety of the environment.

According to him, when a tree is felled, at least two stands of such a tree should be planted.

“the dynamics of this world is being kept moving through the activities of the seen and unseen, plants and animals, living and non- living things.

“Therefore, there is the need to accord everything and every person due recognition because everybody and everything are important. Even if only for the purification of the atmosphere, all plants deserve recognition.

“Plants are very important in the purification and the making of the environment clean and safe,”

Fatoba however called on government and individuals to ensure prudent use of forest resources so as to reduce the loss of bio-diversity. Adding that industries should develop strategies that are environmentally friendly by reducing the emission of gaseous and particulate matters, and treats industrial wastes before it is released into the environment.

He also said Nigerians should learn to recognize that everything around them are important, adding that this would help in decoding the messages in them.

“The teak plants along the main road should only be weeded while others should be left so that the seedlings and saplings can survive, thus increasing the stands and the smothering of the weeds. All the teak stands needs to be pruned so as to increase their economic value.” Fatoba said.
