The University of Ilorin has been struck by tragedy this afternoon as a motor accident occurred on campus involving a commercial bus carrying ten passengers.
Multiple reports indicate that the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon when a bus allegedly somersaulted due to overspeeding.
Speaking with our correspondent, DSP Toun Ejire, the spokesperson for the Kwara State Command of the Nigerian Police, confirmed the report, stating that the accident claimed one life and left others severely injured.
“The incident is true and unfortunate. One student died, and other passengers sustained various injuries.
“They are currently receiving treatment at the school medical clinic,” she added.
According to a press statement signed and released by the Director of Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun, on behalf of the university management, it was confirmed that the accident occurred as the bus was leaving the campus.
The statement read, “The accident happened as the bus was leaving the campus. In response, the university swiftly initiated rescue operations, moving all victims to the University Health Center for immediate medical attention.
“Among the victims, one required advanced medical care and was referred to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) after stabilization.
“Four individuals sustained minor injuries, were treated, and were subsequently discharged. The remaining five victims, comprising two males, two females, and the driver, are currently receiving treatment at the University Health Centre.
“Regrettably, one of the passengers was brought in dead. The university management has transferred the body to the morgue and is actively working to contact the next of kin.
“The University of Ilorin management expressed deep sorrow over the incident, extending condolences to the family of the deceased and wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.”
The management conveyed their prayers for comfort and healing during this difficult time.
