The University of Ibadan (UI) in Oyo State has taken the decision to adjust its staff’s work schedule to three days per week, a response to the recent removal of subsidies. This development was communicated through an official statement signed by G.O. Saliu, the Registrar and Secretary to Council at UI.
In the wake of a substantial increase in fuel prices following the government’s removal of subsidies, G.O. Saliu stated, “The astronomical increase in the fuel pump price occasioned by the removal of subsidy by the Federal Government has imposed huge economic difficulties on the generality of Nigerians.” This situation has particularly affected salary earners who face compounded challenges due to rising transport fares and increased living costs.
Taking into account the economic landscape, the University Management deliberated and recommended a temporary work schedule adjustment for its staff. This proposal was subsequently approved during a Senate meeting on August 3, 2023. As a result, employees will adopt a rotation-based approach, working on-site for three days each week, starting from August 14, 2073. Notably, essential workers will be exempted from this altered arrangement.
UI’s management assured that the arrangement will be reviewed as circumstances improve. The statement also underscored the importance of maintaining commitment, open communication, and collaboration among staff to ensure smooth workflow. The option of remote work is encouraged to facilitate flexibility.
Seeking cooperation from various administrative levels, the university management extended its request to Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, and Units. Their understanding and support are vital to the effective implementation of this intervention.
In taking this step, the University of Ibadan aims to support its workforce through a challenging economic period, ensuring the continuity of operations while acknowledging the financial burdens many are facing.
