Two members of the House of Representatives, Hon. Jallo Mohammed from Kaduna State and Hon. Adamu Tanko from Niger State, have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing internal conflicts within their former party.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, made the announcement during Tuesday’s plenary, reading letters from both lawmakers. Mohammed, representing Igabi Federal Constituency, said his decision was fueled by PDP’s internal wrangling, which he claimed had made governance difficult.
“This unfortunate turn of events has left me with no choice but to seek a more stable political platform through which I can better serve the interests and aspirations of my constituents,” he stated.
He also commended the Speaker’s leadership, describing it as “a driving force for national unity and good governance.”
Similarly, Tanko, who represents Gurara/Suleja/Tafa Federal Constituency, explained that after consulting with his constituents, he realized the PDP’s instability was affecting his ability to deliver.
“It was a difficult decision, but I cannot continue in a party where internal struggles overshadow developmental priorities,” he said.
However, the Minority Leader, Hon. Kingsley Chinda, objected to their defection, arguing that there was no substantive evidence of a crisis in the PDP to justify their exit.
Despite his protest, the Speaker upheld the lawmakers’ decision, further strengthening the APC’s presence in the House.
