Trump Returns to White House, Biden Pledges Smooth Transition

In an unexpected moment of civility, President Joe Biden welcomed President-elect Donald Trump back to the White House on Wednesday, marking a historic return and a new transition of power.

The meeting took place in the Oval Office, where both leaders shook hands, a notable gesture of respect following Trump’s refusal to acknowledge Biden’s 2020 win.

Biden, who withdrew from the presidential race in July, congratulated Trump and expressed hope for a seamless transfer of power to the Republican leader.

Standing beside a roaring fire, Biden, 81, remarked, “Welcome back,” to the 78-year-old Trump, extending his support for a smooth transition.

Reflecting a new tone, Trump acknowledged the challenges of politics and expressed gratitude for the cordial meeting.

“Politics can be tough, but today is a good day, and I appreciate it,” he said, committing to a smooth handover despite some legal documentation pending before his January inauguration.

Outgoing First Lady Jill Biden welcomed Trump with a congratulatory letter addressed to Melania Trump, who was absent from the ceremony.

The discussion was attended only by Biden’s Chief of Staff Jeff Zients and Trump’s incoming Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.

During the meeting, Biden planned to emphasize U.S. support for Ukraine, which Trump has previously questioned. Trump’s appearance also underscored a return to traditional White House transition protocols, which were broken after he lost the 2020 election and refused to meet with Biden or attend his inauguration.

Ahead of the Oval Office meeting, Trump addressed House Republicans, hinting at a possible third-term run, a prospect that would violate U.S. constitutional limits on presidential terms.

Surrounded by allies, including billionaire Elon Musk and other ultra-loyalists, Trump outlined his priorities for government restructuring and announced key nominations, including Fox News host Pete Hegseth as defense secretary.

This renewed White House visit marks a shift in tone and reinforces Trump’s unique influence within the Republican Party as he prepares for his second term in office.
