President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, to commiserate with the government and people of the state following the devastating flood caused by the Alau Dam overflow.
The flood, which struck on Monday, submerged nearly half of Maiduguri, resulting in significant loss of lives and properties.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the president landed in the city around 3:15 pm and was warmly received by Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum.
As part of his itinerary, Tinubu is expected to pay a courtesy visit to the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Umar-Garbai El-Kanemi, before heading to one of the camps set up to shelter displaced persons.
Governor Zulum expressed his gratitude for the president’s visit, stating, “The presence of President Tinubu at a time like this brings great comfort to the people of Borno, especially the thousands who have been displaced by this unfortunate disaster.”
According to reports, the Borno State government has established 36 camps across the state to accommodate the flood victims.
These camps are currently housing thousands of displaced persons who have lost their homes and livelihoods due to the flood.
Speaking on the gravity of the situation, a local resident lamented, “We have never seen flooding of this magnitude in Maiduguri. Entire communities have been wiped out, and many families are left with nothing.”
President Tinubu is expected to address the displaced persons and assess the situation firsthand, while also assuring them of the federal government’s support in the recovery process.
