President Bola Tinubu has inaugurated the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), stating his commitment to fairness, equity, and inclusiveness.
The digital disbursement exercise for the fund was launched at the State House on Wednesday, aiming to remove financial barriers to higher education for Nigerian students.
President Tinubu highlighted the transformative power of education in combating poverty and driving national development.
He stated that “Education is the greatest weapon against poverty. Without it, there is no vision or development. We are investing in education from the foundation to the highest level to ensure no one is left behind.”
Commending the leadership of NELFUND, President Tinubu praised the efforts of Chairman Jim Ovia and Managing Director Akintunde Sawyerr.
He reiterated his commitment to ensuring the success of the fund and fulfilling his campaign promise of building an inclusive society.
The President emphasised the crucial role of education in addressing national challenges such as terrorism and banditry.
“We cannot fight these issues without inclusiveness and proper education. I am honoured to launch this portal, providing hope and opportunity for all.”
Chairman Jim Ovia expressed gratitude for the President’s support, referencing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, which prioritise education.
Managing Director Akintunde Sawyerr assured that NELFUND has sufficient funds to meet the initial demands, with the portal already receiving 110,000 applications since its opening on May 25, 2024.
President Tinubu concluded the event by presenting cheques to students and institutions already processed by NELFUND, with stipends provided for student upkeep and tuition fees directly paid to institutions.
