Tinubu Congratulates Justice Anukam on Re-election to African Human Rights Court

President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Justice Stella Anukam on her re-election as a Judge of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights for another term of six years.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), Justice Anukam was re-elected at the African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting Executive Council in Accra, Ghana, on Friday.

Justice Anukam, a Nigerian, obtained her law degree from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (formerly known as University of Ife), Osun State, Nigeria, in 1984, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in August 1985. 

She is also a chartered secretary, chartered arbitrator, and seasoned administrator.

President Tinubu commended Justice Anukam for her contributions to the development of human rights jurisprudence on the continent and enjoined her to continue bringing her invaluable knowledge and insights to the African Court.

He stated that his administration will continue to support the candidature of competent and qualified Nigerians for international positions, noting the country’s strategic importance in the global community.

The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights is a continental court established by African states to ensure the protection of human and peoples’ rights in Africa. 

It complements the functions of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

President Tinubu noted that Justice Anukam’s re-election is a testament to her dedication and expertise in the field of human rights law. 

He expressed confidence that she would continue to uphold the highest standards of justice and contribute significantly to the court’s mission of safeguarding human rights across Africa.

Justice Anukam’s re-election is seen as a significant achievement for Nigeria, reflecting the country’s commitment to promoting and protecting human rights within the African continent. 

President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting qualified Nigerians in international roles, underscoring the importance of Nigeria’s active participation in global institutions. 

He wished Justice Anukam continued success in her role and urged her to keep making Nigeria proud through her exemplary service on the African Court.
