President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, following his victory in the recently concluded general elections. The announcement came after Mahama’s opponent, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), conceded defeat before the official declaration by Ghana’s Electoral Commission.
In a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Tinubu expressed hope that Mahama’s leadership would bring greater stability to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), where Tinubu serves as chairman.
Commending Ghanaians for their peaceful electoral process, Tinubu stated, “The president applauded Ghanaians for demonstrating again to the world that democracy is the preferred path to achieving political stability, economic development, social justice, and transparent governance in Africa.”
Tinubu also praised Dr. Bawumia for his sportsmanship in conceding defeat, reinforcing Ghana’s democratic principles. He acknowledged Mahama’s previous tenure as President from 2012 to 2017, describing his return to office as a testament to the trust Ghanaians place in his leadership.
The statement highlighted Mahama’s extensive political career, including his service as Vice President from 2009 to 2012, Member of Parliament from 1997 to 2009, and various ministerial roles.
Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to fostering closer ties with Ghana, emphasizing shared cultural and historical bonds, and expressed gratitude to outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo for his contributions to Ghana’s development and regional stability.Tinubu concluded by expressing his eagerness to collaborate with Mahama’s administration to strengthen bilateral relations and promote prosperity across the West African region.
