Three die, two injured in Kano building collapse

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed the death of three people in a building collapsed in Kuntau, Gwale local government area of Kano State on Friday.

The agency in a statement said two other people sustained injury during the incident.

Although the total number of victims was not yet certain as at the time of filing this report, eyewitnesses stated that about 11 persons may be trapped under the rubble.

It was gathered two of the victims have been rescued and rushed to the hospital by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) who were still carrying out rescue operation at the scene of collapse.

According to the NEMA Kano Territorial Coordinator, Dr Nuradeen Abdullahi, the agency received a distress call at about 9:20 am from a good Samaritan that a three story building under construction collapsed at Kuntau Quarters.

He said, “On receiving the information, we quickly sent our rescue team to the scene,” he said, explaining that five people were rescued and taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.

“Out of those taken to the hospital, three were confirmed dead, while two victims sustained injury and are receiving treatment,” he said.

He noted the search and rescue operations was still ongoing to rescue those trapped.

“NEMA rescue team, Kano State Fire Service, Police, Red Cross, NSCDC and SEMA among others are still at the site of the incident to ensure removal of other trapped victims.”
