The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, recently dissolved the executive of the Itsekiri National Youths Council (INYC) due to the organization’s failure to adopt a new constitution.
Palace sources expressed concerns over the longstanding practice within INYC of selecting executive members based on loyalty to specific leaders rather than through a formal electoral process.
During an Itsekiri Youths Assembly held in Warri, the monarch announced the dissolution, calling for a constitution drafting committee and new elections for INYC.
According to the statement, the council’s current executive was dissolved for its inability to implement a new constitution and conduct elections at both the national and chapter levels.
As an interim measure, the Palace has appointed leaders from the National Association of Itsekiri Graduates and the National Association of Itsekiri Students to form the core of the drafting committee, with Chief Omolubi Newuwumi and Chief Wilson Olley serving as advisers.
The committee has until the end of January 2025 to complete the new constitution, paving the way for elections.
The Olu of Warri also emphasized that individuals over 40 should not be considered youth members within the Warri Kingdom.
