The Hollywood action thriller “The Beekeeper” from 2024 has dethroned the Nollywood blockbuster “A Tribe Called Judah” as the #1 movie.
The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) released data showing that The Beekeepers was the most watched movie in Nigeria during the week of January 26–February 1, 2024, with a seven-day gross of ₦48,966,985.
“A Tribe Called Judah” now stands in second position with a gross of N20,312,367 for the same time frame, taking its total to ₦1,384,315,042 thus far.
When “A Tribe Called Judah” opened on December 15, 2023, it became the first movie to earn over N133 million in its first year of distribution.
Funke Akindele became the highest-grossing Nollywood film three weeks after its premiere, with a total of N854 million in revenue.
The overall revenue from her 2020 film, Omo Ghetto the Saga, was N636 million. The revenue from her 2022 film, Battle on Buka Street, was N668 million.
Then, on January 4, “A Tribe Called Judah” broke all previous records by earning N1 billion at the box office, making it the first Nollywood movie to do so.
Malaika and Ada Omo Daddy have also fallen from the top five, landing in sixth and seventh position, respectively, with a combined gross of N6.5 million and N3.8 million over the past seven days.
The narrative of “The Beekeeper” centers on a schoolteacher who committed suicide.
