Some youths took to the streets in Kurna quarters along Katsina Road in Kano on Wednesday to protest the killing of a teenager by police personnel.
The incident has triggered tension in the state, as this is coming amid political unrest in the state following the controversy that trailed the Appeal Court judgement in the state.
According to the report, in the early hours of Wednesday, some gangs of political thugs clashed, disrupting the peaceful atmosphere in the area.
Police personnel deployed to the scene of the incident embarked on sporadic shooting and the release of teargas canisters to disperse the thugs, which led to the killing of one person.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahai Haruna, who confirmed the incident, said a board of enquiry has been set up on the matter.
“Already, the commissioner has ordered the arrest of the inspector and constituted a board of inquiry under the leadership of Area Commander Dala to lead the preliminary investigation while assuring the public that justice will be served.”
In a later statement by Haruna on force official X handle, he disclosed that the inspector has been apprehended.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi, and posted on Wednesday.
The statement read, “The police command is following up on the unfortunate development that occurred in Kurna Quarters, Fagge LGA, Kano State, on November 28, where groups of rival restive youths engaged in fighting and a police inspector who did not receive any command from the existing chain of command fired a shot and unfortunately wounded two persons, as one other person died while receiving treatment at the hospital.
“It is in the forgoing development that the Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Gumel, directed the Area Commander Dala, ACP Nuhu Digi, to fish out the erring police inspector with a view to constituting a board of inquiry into the cause of the incident, of which the outcome will be communicated to the public. The police inspector has since been arrested and is now in police custody.
“This action of the police inspector is quite regrettable. This is because, since the assumption of office by the CP, the police have never entered into confrontation with members of the public, talk less of firing gunshots.
“The police command is fully committed to respecting the rights and freedoms of all people. Therefore, the command is calling on members of the public to rest assured that justice will be served in handling the situation.”
