Super Eagles Safely Back in Nigeria After 15-Hour Ordeal in Libya

The Nigerian Super Eagles have returned to Nigeria after being stranded for over 15 hours at Al-Abraq Airport in Libya, following their African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers match against the Mediterranean Knights.

The team landed safely in Kano, where they expressed relief and frustration after enduring what they described as a “hostile reception” from Libyan authorities.

According to reports, the delay at the Libyan airport was caused by unclear circumstances, but it severely affected the team’s morale. Speaking on their experience, a source close to the Super Eagles stated, “We expected to be treated with some level of professionalism, but the hostile reception was beyond belief. It was an unnecessary delay that took a toll on everyone.”

The Super Eagles had been scheduled to face Libya on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, in the second leg of their AFCON qualifiers. However, due to the prolonged and difficult experience at the airport, the team made the decision to withdraw from the match.

Concerns for the safety and well-being of the players and coaching staff were paramount in this decision. “We couldn’t risk the safety of the players after what we experienced. It was in everyone’s best interest to pull out,” the source added.

The ordeal was made public when Nigerian journalist, Michael Obasino, shared a video on social media confirming the team’s return. In the post, he wrote: “@NGSuperEagles just landed in Kano from the Libyan sonjourn after the last 24 hours of hell in Al-Abraq Airport. The team will now head to Abuja after they finish refueling in Kano. Thank you, Lord.”

Another team official commented on the situation, emphasising the players’ relief at being back in Nigeria. “The boys are tired, but they are happy to be back on Nigerian soil. We are grateful to the fans for their continued support,” the official said.

The Super Eagles landed at Aminu Kano International Airport, where they were met by airport staff and security officials. After refueling their chartered flight, the team is expected to continue their journey to Abuja, where they will regroup and determine the next steps for their AFCON campaign.

Despite the challenges faced, the Super Eagles remain determined to move forward and focus on the tournament. Their return to Nigeria has been met with widespread relief among fans and supporters who have expressed concern for the team’s welfare.

The team’s withdrawal from the AFCON qualifier has left questions about the future of their participation in the tournament, but officials remain hopeful that they will regroup and continue their pursuit of qualification. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
