Super Eagles Goalkeeper, Effiong died at 65

The Nigerian football community is in mourning following the passing of former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Moses Effiong.

Effiong, who was also an assistant coach at Akwa United Football Club, died on Sunday, January 26, 2025, in the United States of America after a long battle with illness.

According to a statement released by Akwa United Football Club, Effiong’s death was announced by the club’s Chairman, Paul Bassey.

Bassey described late Effiong Moses as a complete gentleman, core professional football coach and a wonderful family man who was dedicated and committed to the success of every duty assigned to him.

The statement read, “The Management, staff and players of Akwa United Football Club regret to announce the sudden demise of our goalkeeper coach and a member of Nigeria 1980 Africa Cup of Nations Winner coach Effiong Moses (MON) who passed away early on Sunday 26 January, 2025 in the United States of America after a long battle with illness.”

Effiong’s passing has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian football community, with many paying tribute to his contributions to the sport. His legacy will be remembered for years to come, and he will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and colleagues.

As the football community mourns the loss of this Nigerian legend, his family and loved ones are in the thoughts and prayers of everyone. May his soul rest in peace.

Effiong’s death came barely three months after celebrating his 65th birthday.
