Sultan to FG: Uphold your agreement with ASUU

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called on the Federal Government to bring to an end the continous disagreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The Sultan said this while delivering his address at the 73rd Foundation Day Ceremony of the University of Ibadan on Wednesday, 17 November, 2021.

The Sultan who doubles as the Chancellor of the institution, expressed concern over the lingering disagreement between ASUU and the FG, stressing that, the issues may lead to disruption of academic activities in Nigerian Universities if not resolved.

He said, “I want to request the visitor to please look into the problems we are facing as regards ASUU.
“I will like to call on the government to look into ASUU’s request, where agreement were made to uphold such agreement so that our universities will remain opened.”

He however emphasised that education should be given paramount attention as it is one of the major avenues to build a better society.

In his address, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, charged the graduands to be good ambassadors of the Institution.

He also congratulated the Vice Chancellor on his emergence as the 13th VC, even as he assured him of the council’s support in tackling the challenges of the institution.
On his part, the VC, Prof. Kayode Adebowale promised to deliver his best to the service of the institution.

Citing power supply as one of the challenges confronting the institution, Prof. Adebowale said, “a significant amount of our resources is expended on powering the University. Even with that, we are not able to provide enough hours of power supply.

As part of efforts already been put in place, the VC said discussion has already commenced with the Federal Ministry of Power, while also calling on stakeholders to support the Institution.

Meanwhile, a total of 7,827 students were awarded Bachelor’s Degree, 20 candidates awarded Master of Philosophy, 3,567 academic Degree of Master, 489 were awarded professional Degree of Masters. Also, 71 others were awarded Post Graduate Diplomas while 481 candidates were awarded Doctor of Philosophy degree.

Meanwhile, the visitor, President Muhammadu Buhari who was represented by Deputy Executive Secretary (DES), Administration, National Universities Commission, NUC, Mr. Chris Jibreel Maiyaki assured the institution of his administration continous support.

In the same vein, the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Olubamiwo Adeosun reiterated the State Government’s Commitment to delivering quality education in the State.
