The collapse of a classroom wall at the Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Potiskum, Yobe state, which resulted in the death of one student and injury to five others, has sparked outrage and condemnation of the government’s handling of education infrastructure.
Parents and guardians of the affected students have accused the government of negligence and recklessness, citing the deplorable state of the school’s infrastructure.
“This incident is a clear indication of the government’s failure to provide a safe and conducive learning environment for our children,” said one parent.
The incident occurred on Thursday, around 12:30 pm, when the students were in class.
According to eyewitnesses, the classroom block, which contained two classrooms, collapsed, affecting five students.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Bukar Aji Bukar, acknowledged that the incident was a result of the collapse of the classroom block, but attributed it to unknown causes.
“Actually, what happened was that a block of classroom, which contained two classrooms, came down the corridors of the classroom, and unfortunately, five of our students were affected.”
However, parents and guardians are not convinced by the government’s explanation, citing the lack of maintenance and neglect of the school’s infrastructure.
“The government has failed to provide basic amenities, including a safe and secure learning environment, for our children,” said another parent.
The incident has raised concerns about the state of education infrastructure in Yobe state and the need for the government to take immediate action to address the issue.
The government has promised to investigate the incident and take measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
