The Oyo State Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde has charged Corps Members to exhibit a patriotic spirit and shun any form of negative tendency inimical to peaceful coexistence and national unity.

The governor gave the charge at the swearing-in ceremony of 2024 Batch A, Stream 1 corps members held at the permanent orientation camp in Iseyin, Oyo State.

The governor, whose address was read by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Miss Wosilat Adegoke, said that the scheme will not compromise its mission to mobilise and groom graduate youths for national unity.

He said, “The unquantifiable contributions of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to the indivisibility of our country cannot be overemphasised. The scheme has not compromised its mission to mobilise and groom graduate youths for the promotion of national unity, sustainable development, and self-reliance and to prepare them for the challenges of leadership. Hence, its status as a leading light youth organization in Africa with over fifty years of consistency in fostering national integration, amongst others, cannot be overemphasised.”

He admonished the corps members to obey the rules and regulations of the camp and shun all forms of indecent language during and after the orientation camp.

“My dear, young graduates, it is time for you all to realize that the future and survival of our dear, beloved country rest on your shoulders. As sophisticated, energetic, able, learned, and enlightened minds, do not join the bandwagon of negativity. You have the responsibility to be optimistic about the progress and success of our nation, despite our current challenges. Offer yourself humbly for camp activities and adhere strictly to the camp rules and instructions from camp officials, as against the popular “No gree for anybody” slogan. This is NYSC orientation camp; you must obey instructions.”

Earlier, in his address, the Oyo State NYSC Coordinator, Mr. Odoba Abel Oche, said one thousand seven hundred and thirty-seven corps members, comprising male 852 and female 885, were registered for the three-week orientation programme and urged the corps members to take advantage of the activities to be better equipped for the one-year mandatory service.

He said, “We have put together a fascinating and invigorating program of activities to be facilitated by carefully selected partners, consultants, and collaborating agencies, midwife by a team of competent, indefatigable, and dedicated camp officials with whom I can guarantee you a most rewarding time on this orientation camp.” However, I will not forget to point out that the orientation course is highly regimented. Camp life is intentionally designed to be disciplined and controlled, a radical departure from what many are used to from their homes and campuses. This is to instil in Corps members the discipline that is needed for a successful life.”

The oath of allegiance was administered by Justice Olusegun Olagunju, representing
Chief Judge of Oyo State, Mrs. Iyabo Yerima.

The swearing-in ceremony had in attendance the security officers as well as corporate organisations.
