Shehu Sani Urges Tinubu to Focus on Justice, Equity for National Unity

By Funmi Ojo

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has asserted that changing the national anthem is not the solution to Nigeria’s quest for unity.

Instead, he noted that true unity can only be achieved through the ideals of freedom, justice, and equity.

Sani expressed his views during an interaction at a special dinner organised to mark Democracy Day at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja on Wednesday.

Addressing President Bola Tinubu, Sani highlighted the importance of these core values for the nation’s success.

“Mr. President, I would like to draw your attention to this fact and this truth: A national anthem cannot unite a nation, a national pledge cannot unite a nation, and a constitution cannot unite a nation.

“A nation is united by the ideals of freedom, by equity, and by justice,” Sani stated.

He continued, “This democracy was not a gift given to us by the military, nor was it a lottery that we won. It was a product of struggle and sacrifice.”

Sani emphasised the significant responsibility that lies with President Tinubu, given his background and history of fighting for democracy.

“Mr. President, you have a duty to succeed. If you succeed, we will share your glory because you came from the trenches, from that struggle.

“If you fail, they will say that those of you who fought for democracy have nothing new to offer Nigeria,” he said.

Sani’s remarks underline the critical need for addressing fundamental issues such as freedom, equity, and justice to foster national unity.

He urged President Tinubu to focus on these principles as the foundation for a united and prosperous Nigeria.

In conclusion, Sani reminded the President that his success would reflect the aspirations and struggles of those who have fought for democratic governance in Nigeria.

Conversely, any failure would undermine the credibility of those who championed the cause of democracy.

As Nigeria continues to navigate its democratic journey, Sani’s call to action serves as a poignant reminder of the values that must guide the nation’s path to true unity and progress.
