Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, on Thursday, attended the opening ceremony of the 2024 Press Week, organised by the Kaduna State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), with the theme “The Role of Media in Holding Government Accountable: Emerging Challenges and Prospects.”
In his address, Governor Uba Sani praised the NUJ for their essential role in the development of democracy in Nigeria.
He highlighted the importance of journalists balancing the demand for freedom with the pursuit of truth and the upholding of ethical values and behaviors.
Governor Sani noted that while the media has the right to freedom of expression, this must be exercised with responsibility.
He urged journalists to avoid sensationalism and misinformation, which can undermine public trust in the media and the democratic process.
The Governor also discussed the challenges faced by the media in the current digital age, where the rapid spread of information can sometimes lead to the proliferation of false news.
He encouraged journalists to be diligent in verifying their sources and to prioritise accuracy over speed.
Governor Sani reiterated the need for the media to serve as a watchdog for the public, holding those in power accountable while maintaining a fair and balanced approach.
Hajia Asma’u Yawo Halilu, the Chairman of the Kaduna State NUJ, commended Governor Uba Sani’s administration for its people-centered and inclusive approach to governance.
She highlighted the government’s sustained efforts in ensuring the safety of lives and property within the state.
Hajia Halilu noted that the Governor’s administration has been transparent and responsive to the needs of the people, creating a conducive environment for journalists to operate.
During the event, Governor Uba Sani was honoured as the Grand Patron of the Kaduna State Council of the NUJ.
This recognition underscores his commitment to fostering a free and responsible press in Kaduna State.
The Governor expressed his gratitude for the honour and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the media in their critical role of informing and educating the public.
Uba Sani called on journalists to remain steadfast in their commitment to ethical journalism and enjoined them to continue being the voice of the voiceless, to report the truth, and hold the government accountable in a fair and balanced manner.
The Governor’s remarks set the tone for a week of discussions and activities focused on enhancing the role of the media in promoting good governance and democracy.
