Senate Reacts to Jigawa Tanker Explosion

In the aftermath of the deadly petrol tanker explosion in Majia Town, Jigawa State, which tragically claimed more than 90 lives and left 50 others critically injured, the Nigerian Senate has urged security agencies to adopt more proactive measures to prevent similar incidents across the country.

During its plenary session, the Senate paid tribute to the victims by observing a minute of silence and called for immediate support for survivors.

The Senate specifically directed the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to urgently provide relief materials to those affected by the explosion.

Speaking on the tragedy, a senator from Jigawa State expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life, saying, “This unfortunate incident is a grim reminder of the dangers our people face daily. It is our responsibility to ensure that such disasters are minimized through effective coordination and quick response.”

The Senate also urged the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and other relevant authorities to intensify public awareness campaigns on the dangers of fuel scooping during accidents.

“Many lives have been lost due to ignorance about the risks involved in scooping fuel from accident scenes. It is time for widespread education to prevent further needless deaths,” another senator stated.

The tanker explosion, one of the deadliest in recent memory, has sparked a nationwide conversation about the need for stronger safety measures and public education to reduce the recurrence of such tragic incidents.
