Senate Confirms Kekere-Ekun as Nigeria’s Second Female, 23rd CJ

The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), making her the second woman in the nation’s history to hold this prestigious office.

The announcement came during Wednesday’s plenary session, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, after a thorough screening process.

Justice Kekere-Ekun, who had been acting as CJN since August, was confirmed through a voice vote after nearly two hours of intense questioning by senators, especially regarding her views on judicial reforms.

Senate President Akpabio however, reassured the nation of her capability, saying, “With Justice Kekere-Ekun at the helm, Nigerians can expect a judiciary that upholds fairness, integrity, and justice.”

Her confirmation follows the provisions of Section 231(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, which empowers the President to nominate a Chief Justice based on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council, subject to Senate approval.

In a letter submitted to the Senate, President Bola Tinubu stated, “I hereby forward the nomination of Honourable Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, CON, for confirmation as the Chief Justice of Nigeria.”

During her screening, Justice Kekere-Ekun stated her commitment to tackling corruption within the judiciary. She declared, “I am committed to ensuring that our judiciary remains a bastion of fairness and integrity.” Her stance against corruption aligns with the public’s expectations for transparency and accountability in the Nigerian legal system.

The Senate suspended its standing rules to allow dignitaries, including Supreme Court justices and senior government officials, to witness this historic event. The session highlighted the significance of her appointment, both as a momentous occasion and a crucial step for judicial reforms in the country.

Justice Kekere-Ekun assumes the role following the retirement of her predecessor, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, earlier this year. Senate President Akpabio congratulated her, expressing optimism for continued reforms and a judiciary strengthened under her leadership.
