Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on corps members to adhere to the rules and regulations of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) during their service year, stressing the importance of discipline and commitment.
He reminded them to adhere to camp rules, which are in place to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone.
Sanwo-Olu made the call at the swearing-in ceremony of the 2024 Batch ‘C’ Stream 1 corps members at the NYSC orientation camp in Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos, on Friday.
Represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende, who also serves as the Chairman of the Lagos NYSC Governing Board, the governor urged them to take full advantage of the skills acquisition and development programmes available during their training.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasised the core mission of the NYSC scheme, which was established to promote national unity and peace.
He explained that the orientation programme, which lasts for three weeks, is designed to instill values such as discipline, tolerance, and perseverance; qualities that will serve corps members well throughout their lives.
He also highlighted the opportunities available for entrepreneurship and skills development that would help corps members achieve financial independence during and after their service.
He encouraged corps members to use the orientation camp to network, build new friendships, and form relationships that could benefit them in their future endeavours.
“I urge you to strictly follow the rules and regulations of the camp. These rules are designed to protect you and ensure that your orientation experience is smooth and beneficial for all,” he said.
The NYSC Lagos State Coordinator, Mrs. Christiana Salmwang, who represented the NYSC Director-General, Y.D. Ahmed, congratulated the corps members and disclosed that a total of 4,335 corps members, including 1,484 males and 2,851 females, had been deployed to Lagos State.
She also acknowledged the presence of corps members stationed in Oyo and Osun States.
“These young graduates have gone through the orientation process and are now officially part of the national service. We are proud to welcome 4,335 corps members to Lagos,” Salmwang said.
Salmwang also expressed her gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu for his support towards the NYSC, particularly in helping to establish a permanent orientation camp for the state.
“We are confident that the Lagos State government will deliver a state-of-the-art permanent orientation camp for the comfort of the corps members. The administration’s commitment to this cause is highly appreciated,” she stated.
She also thanked key stakeholders, including the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Hon. Justice Kazeem Aleba, who was represented by Hon. Justice Oyindamola Ogala, and other officials for their support in guiding the youth towards patriotism and national service.
Other dignitaries present at the event included the General Officer Commanding the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, represented by Lieutenant Colonel Odiga; the Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), represented by Deputy Commandant Sunday Solorumi; and several other officials from the Ministry of Youth and Social Development and NYSC.
