The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has authorized the release of 55 inmates from correctional facilities across the state, following recommendations from the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy. This move is aimed at addressing prison overcrowding as part of ongoing Justice Sector Reforms in Lagos.
In a statement, the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, SAN, disclosed that 40 inmates are to be immediately freed, while the remaining 15 will be released after serving additional terms of three to six months. Pedro explained that this action is a fulfillment of the governor’s constitutional powers under Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution, which grants the governor the authority to exercise mercy in such cases.
“Governor Sanwo-Olu is committed to creating a humane justice system that upholds the rights and dignity of inmates while also reducing the strain on correctional facilities,” Pedro remarked.
According to Pedro, the Advisory Council conducted a thorough review of each inmate’s case, considering factors such as the nature of their offense, time served, age, health condition, and conduct. He emphasized that the process aligns with standard guidelines and input from correctional facility authorities.
The Attorney-General added, “The release will be finalized upon completion of the necessary administrative process by the correctional facilities.”
This gesture underscores Lagos State’s commitment to fairer and more efficient reforms in its justice sector, fostering an environment for rehabilitation and second chances.
