Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has instructed the Nigeria Police to investigate and arrest those behind a social media campaign advocating for the exit of Igbo people from Lagos and the Southwest.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Governor Sanwo-Olu condemned the campaign as “reckless, divisive, and dangerous.”
The Governor made it clear that neither he nor the State government supports the campaign, reiterating that Lagos is a home for all Nigerians, irrespective of their ethnic background.
He urged residents to disregard the campaign and similar divisive messages, assuring them that the government is committed to maintaining peace in the state.
The controversial campaign has been circulating on social media, calling for a hashtag protest, #IgboMustGo, from August 20 to 30, 2024.
Governor Sanwo-Olu considers this campaign an effort to create discord between the Yoruba and other tribes in the Southwest, especially those who have chosen to make Lagos their permanent home.
