Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged corps members to remain patriotic and diligent as they embark on their service year.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the NYSC 2024 Batch ‘C’ Stream I Orientation Course held at Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos, on Tuesday, the governor, represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, commended them for completing their orientation.

Governor Sanwo-Olu encouraged the corps members to demonstrate qualities such as “tolerance, patriotism, diligence, and perseverance” both during and after their service year.

He expressed confidence that the three-week orientation course had equipped them with the knowledge and skills needed to excel.

“I am confident that the lectures and training you received during this period will guide you successfully through your service year. Embrace this phase with an open mind and a commitment to contribute meaningfully to Lagos State,” he said.

The governor highlighted the importance of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, urging participants to take their post-camp training seriously as a pathway to self-sufficiency.

He assured corps members of the state government’s continuous support, including collaboration with the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), which provides loans to help establish and grow businesses.

Sanwo-Olu also appealed to employers across the state to warmly receive corps members and ensure their welfare is prioritised.

He added that exceptional performances during the service year would be recognized and rewarded.

During the event, six individuals—including four NYSC officials, one female soldier, and one corps member—were recognised for their outstanding participation.

The award recipients included Omali Emmanuel (OBS Photographer), Obi Bisong (Head Gate), Dimas Adeh (RMS), Mr. Olu Julius (Red Cross), Ogunjimi Olubukola (Platoon 7 Inspector), and a female soldier, Abimbola Anthonia (CPI).

In her remarks, NYSC Lagos Coordinator, Mrs. Christina Salmwang, congratulated the corps members for completing the orientation phase, commending their discipline, teamwork, and commitment to the programme.

She urged them to apply the skills learned during orientation to make a meaningful impact in their places of assignment.

“As you proceed to your primary and secondary assignments, remain vigilant and patriotic. Obey NYSC rules and regulations, avoid unauthorised journeys, and prioritise your safety. When in doubt, seek help from military or police stations, and do not trust strangers,” she cautioned.

Mrs. Salmwang emphasised the importance of maintaining discipline and avoiding activities that could compromise their safety and integrity.

Addressing the persistent accommodation challenges faced by corps members in Lagos, Commissioner Mobolaji Ogunlende acknowledged the difficulty, citing the state’s high population influx.

He assured corps members that the government, through the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, would continue to explore ways to ease the situation.

“We understand the challenges, but we remain committed to supporting corps members. If you face accommodation difficulties, please reach out to us, and we will do our best to assist,” he stated.

The event marked the successful completion of the corps members’ orientation, with stakeholders expressing optimism about their contributions to Lagos State’s development.
