Samson Dauda Becomes the First Nigerian to Win the Mr. Olympia Title

Nigerian-born bodybuilder Samson Dauda has made history as the first Nigerian to win the prestigious Mr. Olympia bodybuilding competition.

Dauda, who now resides in the United Kingdom, clinched the 2024 title over the weekend at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Nevada, USA.

This remarkable achievement places Dauda at the top of the global bodybuilding world, following his impressive third-place finish in last year’s competition.

His victory also saw him outshine Iranian bodybuilder Hadi Choopan, who came in second, and American Derek Lunsford, who finished in third.

A Nigerian Triumph

Dauda’s win has been celebrated widely, especially by Nigerians who have followed his journey.

“This victory is not just for me; it’s for every Nigerian who dares to dream,” Dauda said in a post on his social media, where he has nearly 1 million followers.

Nigerian sports enthusiasts have taken to social media to celebrate Dauda’s victory. “This is a proud moment for all Nigerians,” said fitness expert John Osho. “Samson has shown that no matter where you are, your roots can be your strength.”

The Road to Success

Born on March 11, 1992, in Lagos, Dauda moved to the UK as a teenager. His initial passion was rugby, but he later shifted to bodybuilding after his rugby teammates noticed his physique and encouraged him to compete. His first competition in 2014 set him on a path to stardom.

Known in bodybuilding circles as the “Nigerian Lion,” Dauda has earned respect for his discipline and dedication. His rise to the top of the sport echoes the success of past Mr. Olympia legends like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ronnie Coleman.

Today, Dauda is celebrated as a global ambassador for Nigeria. “I am proud to carry the Nigerian flag on this stage,” he said. “This win is just the beginning for African athletes in this sport.”

A Future Legend

Samson Dauda’s victory is being seen as a turning point for bodybuilding in Nigeria and across Africa. With this title, he has cemented his place as one of the sport’s icons.

“He’s inspiring the next generation of bodybuilders in Nigeria,” said sports analyst Chinedu Nwoko. “His story shows that with focus and determination, Nigerians can excel on the global stage.”

Dauda, who now lives in the UK with his wife Marlena and their dog, Cerberus, continues to share his fitness journey with his fans. His victory in the 60th edition of Mr. Olympia is seen as a major step forward for African representation in international sports.
