The Vice-Chancellor of Rivers State University (RSU), Port Harcourt, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, has declared a strict stance against sexual harassment, examination malpractice, and other forms of misconduct within the institution.
Prof. Zeb-Obipi made this known on Thursday during the university’s 43rd matriculation ceremony, where 11,083 fresh students were officially admitted for the 2024/2025 academic session.
He noted that the figure is the highest number of students ever admitted in the history of the institution.
Addressing the new intakes, the VC emphasised the university’s zero-tolerance policy against social vices, stressing that anyone caught engaging in such behaviour would face severe consequences.
“Our university has zero tolerance for cultism, drug abuse, sexual harassment, examination malpractice, sorting, extortion, stealing, indecent dressing, and other social vices,” Prof. Zeb-Obipi stated.
He urged the students to focus on their academic pursuits and utilise the available resources to achieve excellence.
“As you begin your academic journey, I encourage you to ask questions, seek knowledge, and take full advantage of the opportunities before you, including research collaborations, internships, mentorship programmes, and community service projects,” he said.
The VC also cautioned the freshers to uphold academic integrity and respect the university community.
“With great opportunities come great responsibilities. Be mindful of your actions, respect your peers and lecturers, and always strive for excellence,” he added.
Giving a breakdown of the admission process, Prof. Zeb-Obipi revealed that out of 29,107 candidates who selected RSU as their first choice during the 2024 JAMB examination, only 16,172 met the university’s cut-off mark of 190. Out of this number, 15,348 registered for the Post-UTME screening, while 15,014 sat for the exam.
Eventually, 11,083 candidates secured admission across various faculties.
“Let me congratulate you. You are part of the lucky few admitted into this prestigious institution. This is the largest intake since the university’s establishment,” he said.
Prof. Zeb-Obipi reaffirmed the university’s commitment to providing quality education that will prepare students to thrive in today’s world.
“Our academic programmes are designed to develop critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Our faculty members are experts in their fields, and we aim to transform RSU into a world-class, innovative, and inclusive institution.”
While acknowledging the academic challenges ahead, he assured the students of the university’s support throughout their stay.
“Our academic advisors and support staff are here to guide you. I charge you to be bold, innovative, and become agents of positive change,” he concluded.
The matriculation ceremony was attended by university officials, staff, parents, and family members who gathered to celebrate the new students.
