The House of Representatives has confirmed receipt of 31 memoranda for the creation of additional states across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

This move is seen as a crucial step towards addressing the country’s complex regional dynamics and promoting more effective governance.

According to Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, the proposed states include *Benue Ala State*, *Apa-Agba State*, and *Apa State* from the North Central region, as well as *Amana State*, *Katagum State*, *Savannah State*, and *Muri State* from the North East.

Other proposed states include *New Kaduna State*, *Gurara State*, *Tiga State*, *Kainji State*, and *Ghari State* from the North West, and *Etiti State*, *Adada State*, *Urashi State*, *Orlu State*, and *Aba State* from the South East.

The South South region has proposed *Ogoja State*, *Warri State*, *Bori State*, and *Obolo State*, while the South West region has proposed *Toru-Ebe State*, *Ibadan State*, *Lagoon State*, *Ijebu State*, and *Oke-ogun and Ifeesha States*.

To initiate the process of state creation, Section 8 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) outlines specific requirements that must be fulfilled.

These include a request supported by at least two-thirds of members of the Senate, the House of Representatives, the House of Assembly, and the Local Government Council in respect of the area.

The House of Representatives has emphasized that only proposals that comply with the stipulated guidelines will be considered.

This development marks a significant step towards addressing Nigeria’s regional complexities and promoting more effective governance.
