Reps Ban Alcohol, Hard Drugs Sales in Motor Parks

The House of Representatives has initiated steps to prohibit the sale of alcohol and psychoactive drugs in and around motor parks across Nigeria.

This decision came after a motion proposed by Mr. Abbas Adigun, the representative for Ibadan North-East/Ibadan South-East Federal Constituency, during Thursday’s plenary.

Citing a report from the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Adigun highlighted that 90% of road accidents in Nigeria are linked to alcohol and drug consumption.

He stated, “The use of these substances increases the risk of accidents by impairing coordination, judgment, and vision, leading to the loss of life and property.”

The lawmaker emphasized that, globally, alcohol and other restricted substances are typically confined to pubs, not motor parks or public transport areas.

He expressed concern that motor parks have become hubs for alcohol and drug sales, with drivers consuming these substances before starting journeys, endangering passengers’ lives.

The House resolved to urge Federal, State, and Local Governments to enforce a ban on alcohol and drug sales in motor parks.

Additionally, they called on the FRSC to extend its presence to motor parks, conduct random tests for drivers, and ensure they are sober before driving.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) was also encouraged to focus efforts on motor parks, apprehending and prosecuting individuals selling or using illicit drugs.
