Professor Adejoke Akinyele, Dean of the Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources at the University of Ibadan (UI), has advocated for the removal of middlemen from Nigeria’s food and agriculture supply chain to improve food security.

“If we can eliminate middlemen from the food production chain, it will significantly boost food security in Nigeria.”

Professor Akinyele stated during the 40th reunion of the UI Agriculture and Forestry Class of 1984.

Speaking at the event, which marked four decades since the class graduated, Professor Akinyele emphasized that direct distribution from farmers to consumers could play a crucial role in ensuring a stable food supply.

The reunion, attended by prominent alumni including professors, former and current vice-chancellors, captains of industry, and notable public servants, featured various activities over three days.

These included a Thanksgiving service at the Chapel of the Resurrection, a campus walk, and a tour of university facilities.

The class also paid a courtesy visit to the university’s leadership, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Kayode O. Adebowale and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof. Peter Olapegba. Prof. Olapegba praised the alumni’s achievements and encouraged them to stay engaged with the university.

“The achievements of our alumni confirm the excellence of their time here,” Prof. Olapegba remarked. “We are proud of their contributions and encourage them to continue supporting the university.”

Professor Labode Popoola, Chairman of the Reunion Anniversary Committee and former Vice Chancellor of Osun State University, highlighted the alumni’s commitment to giving back to their alma mater. The class donated 350 banquet chairs to Trenchard Hall and two multifunction photocopiers to the faculties.

The reunion also featured an anniversary lecture titled “Rebuilding Bridges and Giving Back to Alma Mater,” delivered by Professor Victor Olawale Adetimirin. He emphasized the importance of alumni contributions and meaningful social engagement.

During a press conference, the Class of 1984 leadership discussed the reunion’s objectives, strategies for educational reform, and measures to ensure food security in Nigeria.

The event concluded with a banquet chaired by Mallam Yusuf Ali, SAN, where the class honored former lecturers, including Emeritus Professor Tunde Ikotun and Professor Janice Olawoye. Additionally, the class awarded Professor Abayomi Fasina, VC of Federal University Oye Ekiti, and recognized outstanding graduating students from the two successor faculties.
