The Urhobo Christian Ministers Association International has on Wednesday, urged Nigerian youths to suspend the planned nationwide protests against rising hunger and starvation.

The Christian body warned that the demonstrations could further damage the nation’s economy and worsen the hunger crisis.

After visiting Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State at Government House, Asaba, Archbishop Solomon Gbakara, President of the Association, addressed journalists.

He stated that the appeal was necessary due to assurances from President Bola Tinubu, who is reportedly addressing the issues causing widespread hunger.

“As ministers of God, we are concerned about the peace of the country,” Gbakara said.

He urged the suspension of the protests to prevent potential exploitation by hoodlums who might use the situation to loot shops and businesses.

“I want to appeal to Nigerian youths. While we all feel the impact of the hunger sweeping across Nigeria like a harmattan wind, we must be sensitive and constructive in our actions and decisions,” Gbakara stated.

He continued, “Given the measures President Bola Tinubu is implementing to tackle these challenges, we advise that the planned protest be suspended.

“Let’s wait and see the results of Mr. President’s actions. We believe, by faith and through our prayers, that the outcomes will be positive.”

Gbakara added that protests could lead to economic instability, which would exacerbate hunger.

“If the economy crumbles, hunger will worsen, and we may have to return to what Mr. President has already addressed. So, for now, let’s give him more time to fulfill his promises to Nigerians.”

He further stressed the importance of peace, warning against destructive protests that could be hijacked by criminals.

“We pray for peace in the state and the nation, so that the masses, the government, and every citizen can live harmoniously. Our prayers aim to prevent setbacks caused by violence.”

Regarding their visit to Governor Oborevwori, Archbishop Gbakara explained that they came to pray for the Governor and offer advice for the state’s progress.

“Governor Oborevwori listened to our counsel and, by God’s grace, will implement it for the state’s growth and development.”

He concluded, “The Governor specifically requested our prayers for the peace of Delta State, President Bola Tinubu, and the country as a whole.”
