Protest Rocks Ekiti as Students Mourn Corps Member’s Tragic Death

Ekiti State was enveloped in sorrow as the Federation of Ekiti State Students’ Union (FESSU) took to the streets yesterday to mourn the untimely demise of Damilola Iyanda, a youth corps member allegedly slain by a police officer.

The deceased, a native of Ogotun-Ekiti, Ekiti Southwest Local Government Area, reportedly fell victim to police brutality during a confrontation at an after-party following the convocation ceremony at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

The protesting students, chanting solidarity songs, marched to the House of Assembly Complex to demand justice for their fallen comrade.

Expressing their grief, Benjamin, a student leader, denounced the incident as an act of “sheer wickedness” and called upon Speaker Adeoye Aribasoye to intervene and ensure swift justice for the deceased.

“We demand a thorough investigation and prosecution of the perpetrator. The family of the deceased deserves compensation, and adequate medical attention must be provided to his injured brother,” Benjamin declared.

He further emphasised the need to end police brutality and appealed for a friendly and protective relationship between the police and citizens.

In response, Speaker Aribasoye, while receiving the grieving students, condemned the tragic event and assured them of the House’s commitment to pursue justice.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and denounce this senseless act. The House will deliberate on this matter during our plenary session,” Aribasoye affirmed, promising to ensure justice prevails.
