Renowned Nigerian lawyer and academic, Timothy Abiodun Olatokunbo Tugbiyele, has denounced the charges against recent protesters, asserting that their actions do not constitute treason.
He argues that the Federal Government’s current approach is an attempt to intimidate Nigerians and discourage public demonstrations.
In a widely shared Instagram video, Tugbiyele called on the Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), to withdraw the charges against the protesters.
He stated, “It is clear that these protesters are being accused of treason simply to scare other Nigerians from voicing their concerns.
They were protesting against widespread hunger and poor governance—issues that affect many Nigerians. How can protesting these problems be considered treasonous?”
Tugbiyele, who has a long history in the Nigerian legal system, recounted his experience with several notable figures in the legal profession.
“While I do not remember Chief Lateef Fagbemi as my student, I have taught many of his contemporaries, including Honorable Babatunde Ogala, SAN, and Chief Femi Fani-Kayode.
“I also taught Niyi Owolade, former Deputy Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, and Bola Ladna, now Managing Director of a leading Nigerian bank,” he said.
He continued, “Chief Lateef Fagbemi, as someone who was called to the bar in 1980 and as your senior in the legal profession, I urge you to reconsider these charges.
“Keeping these young people in detention for months or even years, merely to discourage protests, is not the right approach. Show mercy and uphold justice. You are part of an honorable profession, and your actions should reflect that integrity.”
Tugbiyele also warned against upcoming demonstrations, advising, “There are plans for another protest on October 1st. I suggest avoiding further demonstrations to prevent additional conflict.”
He concluded his appeal by urging Fagbemi to act with justice and not let political pressures influence his decisions, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the rule of law and protecting citizens’ rights.
