A pressure group, Concerned Oro Kingdom Indigenes, has criticised the kingmakers for failing to observe traditional customs in selecting a new king for the Oro Kingdom.
The group has called on the government to intervene and ensure the proper procedures are followed.
In a statement signed by Elder Ademola Adeogun (General Coordinator), Olatunde Aina (General Secretary), and Chief Olaken Olaoye (Adviser), the group pointed out the importance of adhering to customs and traditions in the enthronement process.
“We must not fail to caution that the customs and traditions relating to the enthronement of a new king need to be observed,” the statement read.
The group identified the kingmakers, contending princes, and elites under the Oro Descendants Union (ODU) as key stakeholders.
They urged these parties not to introduce processes that deviate from the traditional customs of the land.
Highlighting their commitment to the peace and progress of the Oro Kingdom, the group noted that the selection and coronation of an Oba in Yoruba land are deeply rooted in customs and traditions, as opposed to civil proceedings.
They expressed concern over the recognition of candidates without due diligence, emphasising the importance of following traditional protocols to ensure peace and progress.
The Concerned Oro Kingdom Indigenes also called on the government to examine the legitimacy of candidates who do not hail from recognized ruling houses, describing such moves as forbidden and potentially harmful.
“Our honest plea is that de-recognition, degradation, and debasement of culture in the enthronement of our king should not be allowed.
“The consequences could be more than imagined,” the group warned.
The group concluded by urging a return to traditional customs and norms to enthrone a monarch who truly represents the heritage of the Oro Kingdom.
