Police Warn Against Violence, Intimidation Ahead Ogun LG Election

The Ogun State Police Command has issued a stern warning against any form of voter intimidation, electoral violence, or actions that could disrupt the upcoming local government elections in the state.

A statement released on Friday by the command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, called on residents to cooperate with security agencies during the elections, which are set to take place on Saturday across all 20 local government areas and 237 wards in the state.

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, CP Alamutu Abidodun Mustapha, has put in place extensive security measures to ensure a peaceful electoral process.

“The public is urged to support the election procedures, avoid unlawful interference, and refrain from actions such as ballot box snatching or incitement to violence,” the statement read.

The police also cautioned politicians against making inflammatory remarks that could escalate tension at polling stations. “Our role is to ensure the safety of all voters and the protection of electoral materials,” the statement continued.

In preparation for a smooth electoral process, the police announced a movement restriction across the state from Saturday morning until the afternoon, specifically from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., to ensure that the voting process proceeds without hitches. The restrictions will also affect commercial transport services.

The statement further advised those ineligible to vote due to registration issues or other reasons to refrain from causing any disruption and remain at home. Security forces, including mobile units, tactical teams, intervention squads, and undercover detectives, have been deployed to high-risk areas to maintain law and order.

The Ogun State government also announced that Friday, November 15, would be a work-free day for civil servants, as declared by the Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, to allow them to travel to their respective local governments and participate in the election.
