The Nasarawa State Police Command has successfully rescued two students of the Federal University of Lafia who were kidnapped by gunmen on Sunday, March 30.
In a statement released on Tuesday in Lafia, the command’s spokesperson, SP Ramhan Nansel, confirmed that the students, Sadiq Adinoyi and Sakina Adinoyi, were abducted from their lodge at Tudun Kauri, Lafia, around 9:20 p.m.
“Immediately we received the distress call, the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro-Mohammed, directed operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and ‘A’ Division, Lafia, to take action,” Nansel stated.
According to the police, intelligence reports indicated that the victims were being held in a forest behind the 500 Housing Unit along Doma Road. Officers engaged the kidnappers in a gun duel, forcing them to abandon the students and flee.
“Our operatives overwhelmed the kidnappers with superior firepower. They fled in different directions, leaving behind the victims, who were rescued unhurt,” Nansel explained.
He further revealed that a suspect, identified as Ibrahim Musa from Abuni village in Awe Local Government Area, was arrested at the scene.
“The suspect has provided valuable information and is currently assisting our investigation,” he added.
The Commissioner of Police commended the anti-kidnapping unit for their relentless efforts.
“This rescue operation demonstrates our commitment to ridding the state of criminal elements. We urge our officers to remain steadfast in protecting the lives and property of residents,” CP Jauro-Mohammed said.
The police have assured the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and curb the rising cases of abduction in the state.
