The Delta State Police Command confirmed that three suspected kidnappers were killed in a gun battle on September 2, 2024, following a failed attempt to abduct the wife of a member of the Delta State House of Assembly.

The incident, which occurred at Okoloba Junction, Jakpa Road in Uvwie Local Government Area, also resulted in the deaths of two policemen and the lawmaker’s driver, David Imela.

Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, immediately ordered a manhunt for the suspects. Officers were deployed throughout Warri and surrounding areas to track the kidnappers.

In a swift response, the police, led by CSP Iwok Ndifereke of the Ebrumede Division, intercepted the gang’s vehicle at DSC Roundabout by creating a strategic traffic gridlock.

“When the suspects saw the traffic and police presence, they opened fire. Our men responded swiftly and professionally despite the crowded environment,” explained CP Abaniwonda.

Under heavy gunfire, the suspects abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot, but not before sustaining gunshot wounds. Police recovered three AK-47 rifles and the gang’s operational vehicle, registered as WWR-436-GZ, at the scene. The Commissioner however ordered a full-scale operation to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

On October 3, 2024, police tracked the suspects to their hideout in Agbarho. According to the police, an intense gunfight ensued, but the officers, well-prepared, overpowered the gang.

Three of the suspects sustained fatal injuries and were later pronounced dead at the hospital. An additional AK-47 rifle was recovered from the scene.

State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, confirmed that the search for the remaining gang members is ongoing. CP Abaniwonda praised the bravery and professionalism of CSP Ndifereke and his team.

“This operation sends a clear message to criminals that Delta State is not a safe haven for lawlessness,” he said.

Efforts to arrest the remaining gang members continue, as the police intensify their operations.
