Police Arrest Three for Armed Robbery in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command has apprehended three suspects for their alleged involvement in armed robbery activities within the Enugu metropolis and Oji-River areas.

According to a statement released by the command’s spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, on Friday via X.com, the police recovered firearms and other items from the suspects during the arrests.

The first arrest occurred on May 7, when detectives from the Awkunanaw Police Division detained a 31-year-old suspect, David Ogah Bassey, alias “Onye Army”. His accomplice, however, managed to escape.

The statement detailed, “The suspect’s arrest followed a report from a tricyclist who alleged that a gang of three armed robbers, on May 6, 2024, around 10pm, robbed him of his cash, phone, and other belongings while he was conveying them to Garriki, Awkunanaw, Enugu.

“Upon leading the detectives to the scene of the incident, the suspect attempted to escape but was apprehended, and a firearm was recovered from him. The victim identified the suspect as one of the gang members who had robbed him the previous night.”

In a separate operation, operatives from the Oji-River Police Division, in collaboration with the Neighbourhood Watch Group, arrested two suspects, Akabue Favour (18) and Obayi Chiemezie (19), both residents of Trans-Ekulu, Enugu, for alleged robbery.

DSP Ndukwe reported that the suspects, armed with toy pistols, had robbed a victim of cash, a phone, and other belongings. The statement continued, “The suspects are alleged to have used the toy guns to snatch a recovered car from a male victim, robbing him of his cash, handset, and other belongings at Amaetiti-Akwu in the Achi community of Oji-River Local Government Area, on the same date around 5.05am.

“They were unable to escape as the operatives gave chase and apprehended them after their car skidded off the road into the bush.”

DSP Ndukwe confirmed that the suspects will be charged to court upon the completion of investigations.
