The Bauchi State Police Command has apprehended Aminu Mohammed, a 30-year-old man accused of fraudulently posing as a Nigerian Army personnel to extort money from unsuspecting victims.
Mohammed’s arrest followed a tip-off after he allegedly collected N210,000 from a victim, promising to secure a job for him with the Nigerian Army.
According to a statement released by SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, the command’s spokesperson, the suspect was detained by the Tafawa Balewa Housing Estate Divisional Police Headquarters (C Division) at Magaji Quarters.
Wakil revealed that Mohammed had been impersonating a soldier for two years, violating sections 110 (1) and 251 of the Criminal Code.
The arrest, made on July 22, 2024, was based on a complaint lodged by the victim. Mohammed had convinced the victim to pay the sum of N210,000, claiming he could facilitate employment with the Nigerian Army.
The suspect also misled the victim to meet his alleged accomplice in Zaria, but after eight days, the victim failed to locate the supposed contact.
Investigations revealed that Mohammed had never been associated with the military.
He had obtained a pair of camouflage trousers from a serving soldier to bolster his ruse.
Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Musa Mohammed, has ordered a thorough investigation at the state criminal investigation department to gather more evidence for the prosecution of the case.
The Commissioner highlighted the importance of vigilance and caution among the public to avoid falling victim to such scams.
He reassured the public that the Bauchi State Police Command is committed to eradicating criminal activities and bringing perpetrators to justice.
The police have also urged the public to report any suspicious activities or individuals to help in the fight against crime.
The police command continues to work diligently to ensure that those who engage in fraudulent activities are apprehended and prosecuted.
CP Auwal Musa Mohammed reiterated that the command would leave no stone unturned in its quest to rid the state of criminal elements.
