Plight of COED Staff that deserve Urgent Attention by  Jimoh Iyanda

It is no longer news that Staff of Staff of the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin now live pathetic life following what can best be described as maltreatment from the past administration of kwara state.

Having embarked on strike since 18th of May, 2019 and as usual just to cover up from the public, the  management of the institution ascribed the strike as Mid-Break. One would wonder what kind of break would be fixed for such a long period.

It is glaring that the result of so called ‘Mid-Break’ that is now taking forever is not undisconnected with the non-payment of the staffs salaries and as well delaying tactics employed by Abdulfatah Ahmed led Government.

This crises can best be traced back to some years back with the directive of the state government that some state owned higher Institutions should become self sustained through generating internal revenue, thereby using it to pay staff salaries.

The directive however led to increase in tuition fee. Nevertheless payment of Salary became inevitable.  This took the intervention of Staff Union (COEASU) and the students Union embarking on Protests which led to the payment of just 15 percent of their salary with not less than 7 months yet unpaid.

The Management of the college under leadership of Dr. AbdulRaheem Yusuf, the Provost of the college in his own effort in making the college in progressive manner trying his best in paying little percent in making sure the work is been done since his resumption to the office about two years ago.

On this process, the COEASU on 10th June, 2019 after their Congress at IJMB Hall 7, Kwara State College of Education Ilorin resolved to indefinite strike.

Presently the College is still on strike and a lot of efforts is already put in place in the process of bring both students, non-teaching staffs and lecturers back to their various Classes and offices by COEASU, the school Management and as well the Students Union in collaboration with the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS JCC) by consulting different stake holders in seeking the audience of His Excellency, Alh. Abdulrahman AbdulRasaq, the Executive Governor of Kwara State to look into the worrisome condition of the college but it was gathered that the Governor since his Inauguration he has been so busy in touring round all the parastatals of the Government which makes it so difficult in seeking the audience of His Excellency on the matter.

In spite if the busy schedule Governor paid unnoticed visitation to COET, Lafiaji himself, it’s hopefully very soon that he shall visit COED, Ilorin as well to view the condition of the college and proffer lasting solutions to their problems.
